EXO (엑소) Profile
EXO is a 9-member group under SM Entertainment. They debuted with 12 people, but 3 of the Chinese members (Kris, Tao, and Luhan) terminated their contracts with SM with a lawsuit in 2014/2015, citing mistreatment and a failure to meet their health needs.
The group has a “story” attached to themselves, lore detailed across music videos, lyrics, and official statements by the company. The group is from a distant planet and has been chased across the galaxy by those who want their “powers,” unique abilities that each member possesses (Suho has a water power, Chanyeol has fire, Kai has teleportation, etc.) EXO has come to Earth to hide from their pursuers and live in peace. They’re one of the few K-Pop groups to have a full, fictional story that describes their origin/backstory.
There are numerous subunits within EXO, including two that were established at release: EXO-K and EXO-M, which would perform songs in Korean and Mandarin respectively. EXO-CBX is a vocal-focused subunit that formed later in the group’s life, with EXO-SC following shortly after and going for a rip/hip-hop sound.
