NCT is an abbreviation for Neo Culture Technology, which, to quote Genius, "illuminates SM Entertainment’s new and 'evolutionary' approach to the Korean and worldwide music industry." SM Entertainment, NCT’s company and label, has stated the idea of the group is to be infinite, with constantly shifting subunits and arrangements, based in different cities around the world.

Each member was hand-selected by their company. Before being a part of NCT, they were considered members of SM Rookies, a training program for young idols-to-be who are primed and prepared to become a part of a greater group.

NCT Dream is the third subunit of NCT, based around the themes of youth and innocence. The members are among the youngest of all of NCT, with member Jisung being the “maknae” or youngest out of the current 23-person lineup. Dream previously had a stated “graduation” system, where members would leave the group once they turn 20 (the adult age in Korea). Mark had graduated in December of 2018, though this and the whole graduation system has been revoked by SM Entertainment due to fan backlash.
