Background Info:

Obsession was released as the title track under the album of the same name.

The song is rather unique when compared to the whole of EXO’s discography and proved divisive within the group’s fan community when it dropped. Despite mixed feelings from fans, critics named Obsession to be the best song of 2019 in BIllboard magazine.

Song Meaning:

Obsession is a dark song that expresses the group’s desire to escape the nightmares and negativity forced on them by other people. Much of the lyrics paint a picture of a stalker that creeps upon them when they’re at their most vulnerable. EXO has a long and painful history with a certain breed of super-fan called “sasaengs” who are so sickeningly dedicated to their favorite groups that they’ve managed to break into members’ hotel rooms and even steal their underwear. Given this greater context, it’s clear that beyond a mere surface level, the song is being spoken directly to these “fans” with a dangerous obsession, hence the name. It’s a direct message to anyone who wants to violate their privacy or break their trust: “Get away from me.”
