Seventeen is a 13-member group under Pledis Entertainment, which was recently bought by Big Hit (notable for being BTS’s company), though they currently operate independently. They were originally intended to debut with 17 members, hence the name, but 4 members dropped out or were deemed unfit for debut; the name “Seventeen” now signifies the 13 members + 3 subunits + 1 fandom.

They’re well-known for being a self-producing group, meaning many of the members themselves write, compose, and produce much of the music and even design the choreography to go with the songs.

The group is made up of 3 different subunits, which focus on the different specializations of the members: the Hip-Hop Team (which focuses on rapping), Vocal Team (singing), and Performance Team (dance and choreography). Each subunit has a leader, and the leaders themselves make a subunit of their own: SVT Leaders (SVT is an abbreviation of Seventeen). Members DK, Hoshi, and Seungkwan also make a subunit called BooSeokSoon or BSS.
